News that a car insurance company has decided to penalise drivers with points on their licence from a hand-held mobile phone offence is an excellent development, according to road safety experts at the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). It raises some interesting issues, too: does three points on your licence because you committed a hand-held mobile phone offence make you more dangerous as a risk than three points for a “routine” speeding offence?The answer, according to Allianz, is definitely yes. the full story

A Welsh business man from Oxford has invested £34,400 to purchase the number plate WEL 5H at a DVLA Personalised Registrations auction held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales. The business man, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he made the purchase to celebrate Wales' Grand Slam rugby success and he intends to display the number proudly on his new Mercedes CL 500 car. the full story

'Forecourt retailers are not responsible for the current high price of fuel, which is the result of normal seasonal demand being exacerbated by financial speculators investing in the oil market, and the Government’s refusal to cut the UK’s high fuel taxes,’ according to Ray Holloway, Director of the RMI Petrol Retailers Association (PRA). Vehicle Damage Assessors’ requirements for ATA (Automotive Technician Accreditation) competency were given a boost today (9th April) as Sarah Sillars, Chief Executive of the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry), officially opened the country’s first dedicated training facility for vehicle damage assessors. Invited guests including Chief Claims Officer at Zurich Financial Services Ltd and new chairman of the Thatcham board, Bill Paton, saw the curtain raised on the exciting new venture, which will answer the ATA demand of more than 3,000 vehicle estimators from up and down the country. The academy, which covers over 370 square metres, features 2 large vehicle assessment bays and also benefits from 2 fully equipped classrooms to provide a modern learning facility for up to 12 delegates each day. the full story

As last year’s new cars start to appear on used car forecourts, research by Carcraft has revealed that Mondeos are topping the class of 2007 for bargain hunting motorists. The Ford Mondeo 1. 8 LX has the highest depreciation rates with an average fall of 51 (£15,980 to £7,799) and it is closely followed by the Vectra 1. 8 VVT SRI with a 50 fall (£17,210 to £8,499). Carcraft also reports that this year could be a bumper one for used car buyers as economic pressures continue to squeeze new car sales, meaning that record numbers of nearly new cars are available at much reduced prices. Mike Walsh, sales director at Carcraft, commented: “Over recent months the volumes of three to six month old cars in stock have reached an all time high*, meaning that customers have more choice than ever before when it comes to finding quality used cars. “As our research shows there are some excellent deals available at Carcraft as the cars from the class of 2007 graduate to the used car market. the full story
GEM Motoring Assist (GEM), that campaigns for the safety of all road users, is concerned that many drivers and front seat passengers have no idea what happens when an airbag is deployed as the result of a collision. “The airbag is a great safety feature and used in conjunction with a seat belt can often save serious injury,” says GEM Chief Executive David Williams, “But unless they have direct experience of these quick inflating devices drivers and passengers could panic and experience extra stress after being involved in a bump. ”David was made aware of the ignorance of most drivers and passengers by GEM member Matt Day who wrote to the organisation to describe his first experience of an airbag doing its job admirably when he and his wife were involved in a crash that was not his fault. “We were thankful for the extremely fast deployment of the airbags,” said Matt. the full story
