Protyre Offers A Free Summer 2011 Tyre Safety Check

During the 2011 summer holidays, it is predicted that a high proportion of the 2 million or so caravan owners will be taking to the roads. Protyre is concerned that many owners will not carry out safety checks to ensure a trouble free and safe holiday.

Off season storage conditions can have have a detrimental effect on caravan and trailer tyres. It is recommended that simple checks should be carried out before travelling. Tyres should be examined for cuts, lumps or bulges and ensure sidewalls are sound and not affected by cracking or distortion from being left standing over long periods of time. Whilst tyres must have a 1.6mm minimum tread depth, Protyre advises that tyres with less than 2.5mm of tread should be at least considered for replacement, with tyres from caravans and trailer tents over 7 years of age should be replaced irrespective of condition.

The age of tyres fitted to caravans and trailers is often overlooked by owners. The age can be easily determined by a code on the tyre sidewall; the first two numbers provide the week and the third and fourth refer to the year of manufacture. Protyre is currently offering a free Summer Tyre Safety Check at their 53 outlets across the UK.

Of equal importance is tyre pressure. Under of over inflated tyres effect handling and fuel efficiency but more importantly, the extreme result can be tyre failure. Tyres with incorrect tyre pressures can also wear more quickly.
