Thatcham's New Vehicle Security Category Welcomed By TRACKER

Thatcham, the insurance industry’s official body for approving security products, has announced a new category for vehicle security devices. Named ‘Category 6’, the grouping has been welcomed by TRACKER, the UK’s market-leading stolen vehicle recovery specialist.

Building on the integrity of Thatcham’s Category 5 After Theft system for vehicle recovery, aimed primarily at high value loads, insurers have called for a further security category that is attractive to owners of all passenger cars who are keen to protect their vehicles with an accredited tracking device.

Mark Bellwood, director at TRACKER, commented: "We will work closely with Thatcham in the coming months to ensure that we create an effective stolen vehicle recovery device that meets the needs of our consumers and Category 6. It is important that the industry works together to continue offering effective security measures that will make the lives of vehicle thieves more difficult."

TRACKER systems are operated by the UK’s 52 police forces and are approved by 36 motor manufacturers. To date, TRACKER has retrieved more than 13,500 stolen vehicles worth £270 million and as a result more than 1,700 vehicle thieves have been arrested. A majority of insurance companies recognise Category Q, of with TRACKER is listed and offers a discount for having TRACKER fitted.

TRACKER currently offers four stolen vehicle recovery systems to meet the varying needs of the consumer and will continue to offer competitively priced and consumer focused products:

TRACKER Retrieve is the entry-level system. The device offers comprehensive technology at a competitive unit price of £199*. On discovering a vehicle theft, the owner contacts the police and TRACKER. The unit is activated, thus enabling it to send a silent signal to TRACKER detector units fitted in police patrol cars and helicopters, leading them directly to the exact location of the stolen vehicle.

TRACKER Monitor operates as per TRACKER Retrieve, but has the added benefit of a movement sensor. Priced at a reasonable £299* for the unit, it is ideal for those who are often not in the vicinity of their vehicle, or prefer to have the reassurance of extra security. This device sends an automatic alert to TRACKER’s 24-hour control room if the vehicle is illegally moved, enabling the control room to contact the owner to confirm the theft.

TRACKER Horizon offers further piece of mind by operating as per Monitor, but with a dual technology function incorporating a combination of satellite mapping and proven land based radio transmission to locate a stolen vehicle. The unit price is £499*.

TRACKER Echo is a Thatcham Category 5 accredited product priced at £599 for the unit. This device offers all Horizon benefits as well as Europe-wide tracking; it is also fitted with a driver validation solution to combat vehicle theft with the keys.
