TomTom Publishes The 25 European Christmas Shopping Venues With The Most Traffic

TomTom has published a list of 25 European Christmas shopping venues forecast to have the most traffic this December. TomTom HD Traffic Centre experts analysed traffic data from 2009 and predict London's Westfield Shopping Centre on 5th December 2010 will be the most congested shopping hotspot in Europe.

Traffic analysis also indicates that more of us are likely to do our Christmas shopping earlier than expected. In four out of the five countries surveyed, the first Saturday of the month - unlike previous years - is expected to be the busiest for shoppers.

Ralf-Peter Schaefer, Traffic Director, TomTom said, "Adverse weather conditions mixed with lots of extra Christmas shoppers is a recipe for traffic chaos on the roads. Our advice to shoppers is to check the live traffic situation on their route before they set out. TomTom's free online Route Planner, uses historical as well as real-time data to give shoppers the most accurate travel information available."

Some national stereotypes are likely to persist this December. The Germans and the Dutch win first prize for efficiency. Based on 2009 data, the first Saturday in December is by far the most popular for shopping, with Limbecker Platz in Essen and Amstelveen's Stadshart the most popular locations.

The Brits and the Belgians spread their shopping fairly evenly across December - but when they shop, they go out in force. Belgian and UK shopping centres occupied all top five positions for the most congested shopping centres in December, with London's Westfield in the lead.

And perhaps fashionably late, the French tend to leave their shopping until the last weekend before Christmas. The most hectic French shopping centre last December was Creteil Soleil, just outside Paris.

For shoppers this Christmas, there's no need to rely on last year's figures to decide when to hit the shops. TomTom's HD Traffic provides live information on traffic jams and congestion, allowing drivers to plan their journeys around the quietest times of day - freeing up the roads for everyone.
