Thunderbirds Are Back

The Thunderbirds FAB 1 Film Car

The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire has a new arrival in the museum - the Thunderbirds FAB 1 film car is on long-term loan to the museum from the Ford Motor Company.

The car is larger than life, at 23-foot long and six feet wide. The six-wheeled, bright pink, bubble canopy limousine is the most exotic car in the museum, towering over the new Rolls- Royce Phantom and Aston Martin Vanquish.

Ford Design of Europe helped to create this fantastic car in 2003, when Working Title approached them with the opportunity of working in a collaborative role as design and technical consultants on the Thunderbirds movie. Working closely with the filmmakers and visual effects specialists, it was an offer they keenly accepted.

One of the designers was Tony Hunter who, whilst on assignment from Land Rover, Gaydon designed much of the car including the interior. He was previously responsible for the New MINI interior and the Tomb Raider special edition Land Rover Defender in 2001. He said: "Working on Thunderbirds, however, was a dream come true. I was a big fan of the series when I was growing up, and used to watch it every week whilst visiting my gran, so obviously when I was asked whether I fancied working on FAB 1, I jumped at the chance."

The car is centre of attention at the Heritage Motor Centre - home to the world's largest collection of historic British cars. Visitors to the museum can see this special car and many more, including a range of film and royal cars from the past. The Centre is open daily (except 24-26 December) from 10 - 5. Entrance is £8 adults, £7 concessions, £6 children (5-16 years,) under fives FREE. Advance group bookings receive a discount at £6 per person. For more information logon to
