The Thatcham Registered Locksmith Scheme

Thatcham, the insurer funded research centre, in conjunction with the Auto Locksmith Association and the Master Locksmiths Association has established a new service to provide a database of Thatcham Recognised Locksmiths to assist owners and minimise the risks associated with missing and replacement vehicle keys.

This new scheme will cover cars, vans, motorcycles, light commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction plant and machinery. To be registered the locksmith will have to meet a number of criteria including quality control procedures, which will be subject to audit, staff Criminal Records Bureau checks, adherence to the Auto Locksmith Code of Practice and be able to prove competency through the Auto Locksmith Industry exam.

Successful applicants will be permitted to use the TRL logo for the duration of their recognition and be listed on the Thatcham website. This database will provide the body repair industry and vehicle owners with a quick, easy guide to automotive locksmiths in their area, who conform to the requirements of Thatcham's strict criteria.

Mike Briggs, Thatcham's Vehicle Security Manager, said: "The Thatcham Registered Locksmith scheme will provide a major improvement in vehicle security in the event of lost or missing keys both for individual motorists and for businesses."
