Haynes Fights Rising Motoring Costs

Motorists may be enjoying cheaper fuel at the pumps but the overall cost of running a car is still rising according to a recent report by the RAC. The average car now costs £15 a day (£5,500 a year) to run. Maintenance costs have risen by nearly 10 per cent in the last 12 months and MOT fees have risen too just recently to a hefty £44.15.

Is there any good news? Yes there is, you can still work on your car yourself with the help of a Haynes Car Workshop Manual at the mere cost of just £18.99, the Haynes Workshop Manual could save you literally you hundreds of pounds. If your vehicle fails the MOT test and you take it away to be repaired, you will pay £44.15 for the original test and a re-test fee of the full £44.15. Obviously, it's best for your car not to fail the test - which is why each Haynes manual has a section detailing the checks you can do before the MOT test.

These checks include: the handbrake, footbrake, steering wheel and column, the seat belts, wiper blades, the lights and the horn. You can assess the condition of the shock absorbers and check for play in wheel bearings or suspension joints. You can also examine brake pad wear and the condition of driveshaft gaiters. The wheels and tyres should be inspected thoroughly and you should look for corrosion in the vehicle structure.

If your car does fail, a Haynes manual can again save you money. If it has failed on certain items - such as direction indicators, mirrors and windscreen wipers/washers - there is no re-test fee if you return your car to the original MOT test station before the end of the next working day. With the help of a Haynes manual, you should be able to fix most of the items that do not demand a full re-test fee.

Haynes is the world's leading publisher of automotive repair manuals and renowned for teaching millions of car owners how to carry out routine maintenance and repairs. Haynes publishes manuals for more than 200 cars and vans as well as useful glovebox guides such as Your Car .
