Considering the state of the economy and employment figures new car registrations were only down 4.4% on 2010 with 1.94 million new cars registered.

Private Sales declined in 2011 with fleet sales boosting the figures, which were helped by the launch of new more fuel efficient models. The Ford Fiesta was the best selling new car in 2011, with the VW Golf the best selling diesel model.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) they believe 2012 will challenging but fairly stable with signs of recovery in 2013.
