The New 3-Door Mitsubishi Colt

Published: 15th December 2004

Three lively Euro IV compliant engines - 75bhp three-cylinder 1.1-litre and 95bhp four-cylinder 1.3-litre petrol engines and a 95bhp 1.5-litre common rail diesel engine perfectly complement the dynamic styling. All petrol engines are Mitsubishi-developed all-alloy, four-valves-per-cylinder, DOHC units, featuring the MIVEC system which switches between inlet cam profiles to boost torque at low speeds and power at high speeds for all-round greater performance and efficiency. Combining flexibility and frugality, the 95bhp direct injection, common rail DOHC diesel with turbocharger and intercooler notches up 58.9mpg in the combined cycle, yet completes the 0 to 62 mph dash in just 9.9 seconds.

The Colt 3-door range has been engineered to be fun to drive. With suspension fine tuned on European roads and a centre of gravity lowered by 20mm compared to the 5-door, the MacPherson strut front suspension with anti roll bar, and torsion beam rear, combined with a long wheelbase and wide tracks provide excellent stability and cornering ability as well as a compliant ride.

Sharing the same wheelbase and track as the 5-door also means that Colt 3-door offers a lot more interior space and flexibility than its ‘racy’ profile would suggest. Rear seat passengers have the convenience of reclining backrests - split 60:40 - and the one-piece seat cushion also slides. Fully folding the rear seats opens up a competitive 535 litres of luggage space (VDA), while added convenience comes from a front passenger seat backrest that can be conveniently folded forward allowing long items to be carried.

The Colt CZT

With its 1.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled engine, uprated suspension and strengthened bodyshell, the £12,999 Colt CZT delivers a dynamic package at a very competitive price. Rather than out and out brute force capability, this is a car designed to appeal to those seeking instant and effortless performance with sharp styling to match. 0 to 62 mph dispatched in 8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph are testimony to the advanced nature of its power unit whose specification includes hollow camshafts and low friction pistons to deliver 147bhp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 210 Nm at 3,500 rpm.
