Space Star Picks Up Budget Towcar Of The Year Award
Published: 7th October 2003
Barry Williams, Editor of The Caravan Club Magazine and driving judge commented, ‘This year the Space Star shone over the rest of the entrants. It impressed driving judges with its sheer pulling power, its strong 1.9-litre diesel engine, faultless stability and practical body shape. The caravan ability judges called it a ‘cracking car’ that swallowed a lot of touring impedimenta.’
Rivals in the competition included the Citroen Berlingo Multispace Forte, the Daewoo Tacuma 1.6SE, the Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD ELX, the Daihatsu YRV Turbo 130, the VW Polo SE FSI, the Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 and the Kia Magentis LX 2.0 Auto. However, none of the competition could match the all-round practicalities of the Space Star.
The Space Star 1.9 DID ‘S’ is priced at £12,999 and comes equipped with a 115bhp 1.9 direct injection diesel unit based on a common-rail system. With ABS braking, alloy wheels, electric windows, air conditioning, CD player, sports seats and roof spoiler, to name just a few of the standard features, the Mitsubishi Space Star represents excellent value.
Fifty-three cars entered the Towcar of the Year competition, their
combined value in excess of £1million, and were put rigorously
through their paces at Millbrook Proving Ground. Six driving judges
assessed towing performance with points awarded for traction, stability,
braking, acceleration and hill-starts. Cars were also tested by
two separate pairs of judges for ‘caravan ability’,
which equates to their user-friendliness and ability to accommodate
passengers comfortably, along with typical caravanning holiday luggage
and equipment.
