Outstanding Training Accolade For MG Rover

Published: 28th October 2002
MG Rover has received a major accolade for training young people.

The Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) gave MG Rover a grade of ‘outstanding’, to the company for leadership and management, equality of opportunity, engineering, technology and manufacturing, business administration, management and professionalism. Additionally, quality assurance was acknowledged as ‘good’.

The report further commented that: "There is excellent management of training at MG Rover."

MG Rover and in particular its Young People Development department was inspected by the ALI. This involves observing activities in the work-place, carrying out reviews and interviews with employees.

The ultimate aim of the initiative is to improve quality standards and ensure learners are getting the best possible education and training.

Bob Beddow, director human resources said: "I am really very pleased with the outcome which reflects upon trainees, placement managers, our partners in further education and my own staff. They are all to be congratulated."

David Sherlock, chief inspector of adult learning, said: "This is a wonderful achievement by MG Rover, the quality of their training is a model for all, recognising the value of training not only to meet business needs but also in the personal development of staff. Excellent training provision does exist in this country, as MG Rover has proven – and the sharing of such good practice is essential to drive up standards across industry."

David Cragg, executive director of the Birmingham and Solihull learning and skills council said: "It’s clear from these extremely impressive results that training lies at the very heart of the new company. Training on this scale and of this quality distinguishes MG Rover as a leader in its field and bodes very well for the company’s future competitiveness."

MG Rover Group currently has 107 trainees on its Advanced Modern and Foundation Apprenticeship schemes.
