MP Glee Over UK Motor Industry
Published: 23rd October 2002
“Despite the pressures of the pound's strength, the achievements of MG Rover and the global automotive companies that have bases in the UK are there for all to see at the Motor Show,” said the MP, who is also Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Motor Group.
“MG Rover gave a world debut to its new X-Power SV at the Show yesterday, symbolising the rebirth of a great British company and demonstrating just how far the company has come in the last couple of years.
“The importance of having a high-volume car manufacturer here in the UK should not be underestimated. When BMW announced it was pulling out of the UK two years ago, the consequences were grave for the local economy - if Longbridge had closed some 20,000 people could have lost their jobs.
“But the sterling work put in by MG Rover management, staff, local partners and the government, including some tremendous efforts on the part of transport secretary Steven Byers, meant the future of MG Rover was secured and is now looking exceptionally bright.
“Of course, there are challenges ahead - any company
that is complacent is in deep trouble - but I'm certain that
MG Rover has what it takes to succeed, and that's something
worth celebrating.”
