MG Targets Another Podium At Rockingham

Published: 19th June 2003
Two weeks on from the team’s encouraging podium finishes at Silverstone, MG Sport and Racing is looking forward to its first visit to the UK’s newest race circuit, Rockingham near Corby, Northants.

There will be two one-hour familiarisation sessions on Friday, June 20. These will be extremely important as the circuit combines part of the hugely fast oval track with a twisty infield to produce a track similar in character to the F1 track at Indianapolis for the USA Grand Prix.

Anthony Reid said: "It’s great to have a new circuit introduced to the calendar. The racing promises to be good with plenty of slip-streaming down the straights and good overtaking possibilities at the hairpin. The chicane at the end of the start/finish straight promises to be pretty exciting too."

The mixture of long straights and tight infield means that the race car set up will be critical. Warren Hughes said: "We need to strike a balance between aero efficiency and handling. It promises to be a very technical circuit which will take some considerable skill to get right. The 42 kg success ballast following my third place at Silverstone won’t help, but we made really good progress with set up there and have made further improvements since then. We really think we can get on the podium again this weekend."

Colin Turkington finished third in race one at Silverstone and is very excited about Rockingham. Colin said: "I raced there in the 2001 Fiesta Challenge so have some idea where the corners are and my car will only be carrying 3 kg ballast. Mind you, the other drivers are real professionals and it won’t take them long to learn their way around."

Kim Johnson, director MG Sport & Racing said: "The prospects for this race are intriguing. All the teams are starting from a level playing field, but with WSR we have vast reserves of racing experience, so the team has every reason to be optimistic for a good result."

Dick Bennetts, managing director, WSR added: "This weekend will be our first time at Rockingham. I understand some teams have tested there before. We are looking forward to the two test sessions on Friday to gather as much data as possible for the race. It would be great to carry forward the momentum from Silverstone and achieve more podium finishes at Rockingham."
