H.M. Customs and Excise has placed an initial order for the supply of 76 new Rover 45 cars. The contract was received following HMC&E’s satisfaction with the operational benefits of the Rover cars and was keen to lead with the environmental and cost effective package offered by MG Rover Group.

Rover 45 provides HMC&E with a good Whole Life Cost position supported by an affordable initial price, low CO2 emissions and good operating economy. A combination of high specification, good safety features and value-for-money package all contributed to the reasons for purchase.

For petrol versions, the ability to have an approved LPG conversion fitted through MG Rover’s dealer network was seen as another beneficial proposition, by HMC&E, to help progress their ‘green fleet’ policies. Other Government Department’s have also expressed interest in the development of the Rover LPG vehicles.

The initial 76-car order is made up of 1.8-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines, in 5-door hatchback and 4-door saloon bodystyles. There is also the possibility of purchasing more Rover cars already fitted with LPG conversions.

All MG Rover dealerships are being given the opportunity to become approved LPG installers through the company’s partnership with EcoGas Systems Limited and Landi Renzo S.R.L. MG and Rover cars fitted with the approved LPG conversion retain their 3-year product warranty.

Tony Burkes, national fleet manager for H.M. Customs & Excise, said: "Quite apart from the number of product merits for purchase, we were delighted to work with MG Rover Group, who provided us with very good customer service. Their interest in meeting our needs was most welcome and the ability for our fleet to be fitted with the approved LPG conversions produces a further opportunity to enhance Whole-Life operating costs. My colleagues have already expressed their delight at the prospect of driving Rover’s latest 45 model."

John Granby, business development manager, MG Rover Group, said: "To gain business from H.M. Customs and Excise is great news. MG Rover Group’s Fleet business operates around offering fleets a whole-package arrangement and recent developments – which include new tax and environmental benefits, like the turbocharged 1.8T Rover 75, the MG ZT CDTi and approved LPG conversions – mean that the company is addressing the requirements of our customers. We are confident that all of these developments will help to develop MG Rover Group’s position as a major supplier to the Corporate market – with large national fleets, government bodies, medium and local business. The fact that we are an independent British company adds pride to this achievement."
