MG Ready For Bank Holiday At Brands Hatch

Published: 19th August 2002
Anthony Reid will have fond memories as he travels to Brands Hatch Indy Circuit at the weekend (24/25/26 August), as this is where he registered MGs first win in the British Touring Car Championship on their return to the series in 2001.

MG were the only other manufacturer to break Vauxhall’s stronghold last year, and indeed this year until Honda achieved success recently at Knockhill. With MG currently running second in the Manufacturers’ Championship Anthony Reid is eager to repeat last years performance and secure another podium finish. Putting Knockhill behind him and looking forward to Brands Hatch, Anthony said: "I felt unfulfilled after Knockhill. I really believed that two poles and a win were on the agenda but the weather worked against us. Brands Hatch will give us another bite at the cherry as I'll be going to a track that suits the MG ZS with little less weight."

Warren Hughes will be glad to return to a familiar circuit following his disappointing outing at Knockhill. Warren, who secured a win for the MG ZS at Silverstone earlier this year, will be pushing hard for points. He said: "I've been waiting to go back to Brands Indy Circuit since we left there last year as this is where I secured pole position. We obviously have a car that is suited to the circuit so there is no doubting that we are in a position to score a strong podium finish and carrying minimal weight is a bonus."

Dick Bennetts of WSR added: "The MG ZS's will be running with no ballast which will be a real bonus at Brands. WSR and MG had our first BTCC victory together at Brands last year and achieved a podium at the start of this year, so a successful weekend should be on the cards!"

Team Atomic Kitten entered the BTCC scene at Oulton Park in April and since then has produced some impressive performances with Colin Turkington completing a hat-trick of wins and Gareth Howell currently running third in the Independents Cup.

Colin said: "Brands is an exciting prospect as my car will be running with minimum ballast, so the aim is to achieve two solid finishes and pick up some more valuable points. I've also just finished my University exams which feels great!"

Gareth is familiar with the circuit having been an instructor and rates Paddock Hill as one of the most challenging in the calendar. He comments: "Brands is always tricky and passing can be quite difficult during the race so it’s very important to have a good qualifying run. I really can't have anything less than a double victory in the Independents Cup to stay in the running for the championship. Being on the podium overall is something I'm aiming for in the remaining races."
