When one of Britain’s leading home delivery specialists went shopping for a new fleet of vans, rigids and tractors, it found the perfect supplier right on its doorstep.
Fiege Merlin has ordered a total of 168 Mercedes vans and trucks, together worth some £3.8 million!
The UK subsidiary of one of the largest companies in Europe, the German-based Fiege Logistik Group, Fiege Merlin has its UK headquarters in Westbury, Wiltshire. Its new vehicles are being supplied by Mercedes dealer Rygor Commercials, whose own base is just around the corner.
The new fleet comprises 106 3.5-tonne Sprinter 311CDI high-roofed panel vans, 56 7.5-tonne Atego 815s and half a dozen 4x2 Actros 1840 tractor units with Long Distance cabs.
The vehicles, which will operate from Fiege Merlin’s nationwide network of 30 depots, are all the subject of five-year contract hire deals with the manufacturer’s in-house specialist, Mercedes Benz CharterWay.
As well as providing home delivery services to some of the best-known manufacturers and retailers in the white goods and DIY sectors, Fiege Merlin operates a ‘B2B’ parcels delivery service.
The company runs some 500 vehicles, with 7.5-tonne rigids forming the backbone of the fleet. This latest order means that Mercedes Benz can now claim the major share of its fleet.
Fiege Merlin is using the new Sprinter vans and Atego rigids to make home deliveries, while the tractors are working at 38 tonnes and trunking between depots.
It conducted an extensive evaluation of the truck and van market before placing its order with Mercedes Benz. Declan Connolly, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, says a number of factors influenced the decision.
"The fact that Mercedes Benz was able to offer us a ‘one-stop shop’ solution by supplying each of the different types of vehicle that we needed was a definite advantage," explains Mr Connolly.
"The response from the Mercedes Benz team was also superb. They were prepared to be very flexible in tailoring the contract hire arrangements to suit our operational and commercial requirements, while the Mercedes dealer network offers service points convenient to our own locations.
"In addition to this," he continues, "we already run a number of Mercedes vans and 24 Actros 4x2 tractor units that we took a couple of years ago and which have proved very reliable and fuel-efficient. So we know all about how good the product is.
"Our Mercedes vehicles are also popular with their drivers and help us to present the image of quality that we want both for our own business, and for our many ‘blue chip’ customers."Published 30 September 2002
