The new Mercedes Benz SL-Class will have a starting price of £72,495 and will be arriving in the UK during June 2012.
At the time of the launch there will be two models, SL 350 priced £72,495 and the SL 500 at £83,445 – the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG will follow on later in the year.
The new SL has been designed to be lighter and leaner than its predecessor and is built almost entirely of aluminium. Mercedes have worked hard to reduce the SL’s carbon foot print with attention to improving fuel efficiency and lowering CO2 emission – which are up to 30 per cent lower than the previous model, whilst increasing performance.
The Mercedes Benz SL 350 features a V6 3.5 litre BlueDIRECT engine that delivers 306 hp / 370 Nm torque which will propel it from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds and then on to a limited top speed of 155 mph. Official fuel consumption figures on the combined cycle are 37.7 mpg and emissions of 176 g/km.
The Mercedes Benz SL 500 is powered by a V8 4.7 litre BlueDIRECT engine that produces 435 hp / 700 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is 4.6 seconds with a limited top speed of 155 mph. Official fuel consumption figures on the combined cycle are 30.7 mpg and emissions of 214 g/km.
The SL-Class will feature Mercedes optional ‘HANDS-FREE ACCESS’ to the boot, as part of the optional Keyless-Go Comfort Package. By waving your foot under the rear bumper, the luggage compartment can be opened or closed automatically, not too sure if that is a good idea or not.
Mercedes claim that the SL is the world’s safest convertible with standard passive and active safety features that include: PRE-SAFE, NECK-PRO, ATTENTION ASSIST and ADAPTIVE BRAKE. The pro-active DISTRONIC PLUS AND PRE-SAFE BRAKE being optional safety features.Published 23 May 2012
