Mercedes Benz R-Class Road Test

Mercedes Benz R-Class
One thing that you will have to get used to if you buy an Mercedes-Benz R-Class is the size of it, the short wheelbase model is circa 16’ 2” long and the long wheel base is about an inch short of 17’. The width mirror to mirror is nearly 7’ 7”, which in comparison to an E-Class Estate 6’ 9” is pretty wide, an average family car is around 6’ 6”. I made the mistake of taking the R-Class down to a country pub on the Helford Estuary only to find that I couldn’t easily turn around - a few of the locals bet that I wouldn’t be able to do it, I did, but it took some effort.
On country lanes the mirrors are often touching both sides of the hedge, it is a big vehicle and the mirrors can be power folded in. You do get parking sensors (Park Assist) to protect all four corners from damage and the R-Class does need them. Parallel parking isn’t best left to the last minute as you do have to choose your space wisely to save yourself from embarrassment.
Overall there is little direct competition to the R-Class in the luxury cross over segment, it is a very competent car, where it faces plausible competition is if you remove its four wheel drive capability, then there are other MPV / People carriers that are more accommodating and a lot cheaper. But I doubt that potential buyers want to drive an MPV, they want to drive a luxurious grand tourer with Mercedes-Benz appeal, if that is you then the R-Class is a commendable choice.
*Since publishing this review Mercedes-Benz have introduced a 280 CDi (diesel) and are introducing an AMG 6.3 model as well. There is also the introduction of the option of seven seats.
