Mercedes Benz R Class Review

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class was introduced in the UK on the 6th April 2007.

The R-Class is billed as a Grand Sports Tourer capable of taking a family of six, across continents in first class comfort. Really it is a cross over vehicle, a people carrier, a four wheel drive and an estate car all rolled into one mammoth sized vehicle.

There are two wheel base options available: standard and long wheelbase, the difference in price is £1,500. The long wheelbase model is 5,157 mm from nose to tail and the standard is 4,922 mm. The only real difference between the two models is the leg room offered to rear seat passengers. I should point out that if you are thinking of accommodating six passengers and their luggage on board then you should look at the long wheel base version as it will accommodate an extra 200 litres of luggage. Front and middle seat passengers are treated well and the seats are supremely comfortable. The middle seats are individual executive style seats, the two rear most passengers sit on individual seats that pop up from the floor. There are ISOFIX child seat fixings on both of the two rear rows of seats, meaning that you can seat four children safely.

The front sports seats are electrically adjustable and surprisingly there are six electric windows, well of sorts, third row passengers benefit from rear electric vent windows.

We drove the R 320 CDI Sport, which at the time of this review was priced at £41,425. The base R-Class starts at £38,475, the SE or Sports trimmed models are an extra £2,950. The top of the range long wheel based model is the R 500L which weighs in at £51,490.

There are three engine options, two petrol, the R 350 and R 500 and the diesel R 320. There is a 272 hp, 3.5 litre, V6 petrol engine in the R 350; a 306 hp, 5.0 litre, V8 in the R 500, and a 224 hp, 3.0 litre, V6, diesel engine in the R 320 CDI, which we took on a road test to Cornwall.
