Ease of Use

Getting in and out of the Mercedes Benz M-Class is a fairly easy affair bar getting over the Sport's running boards, when muddy they can be slippery and if you have shortish legs trying to step over them results in mud on your legs or clothes.

Once inside getting comfortable is easy, the driver's seat is fully electric with memory and the steering column is electrically adjustable for rake and reach. It would be nice if the interior mirror was also electrically adjustable, especially with two or more drivers.

The driving position is commanding and all round vision is very good. Our test car was fitted with an optional (£352.34 ) reverse park camera, which makes precise parking an easy affair plus there are front and rear parking sensors. We would certainly recommend the camera, especially if towing as it makes lining up to the trailer so easy.

With the rear seats in place the ML can carry four-five adults in comfort with 500 litres of luggage space, with the seats down this increases to 2050 litres. Should you need to increase the number of passengers then we would recommend the GL-Class, as it can accommodate seven but it is more expensive.

ISOFIX and top-tether child seat fixing points are fitted as standard in the outer rear seats and automatic child seat sensors that work with Mercedes Benz child seats fitted with a transponder.

Mercedes Benz have addressed one of our wishes from when we lasted tested the ML, the Easy-Pack tailgate is now standard. It allows you to open and shut the rear tailgate with a remote control or with either of the buttons on the tailgate or drivers door. Which is great for anyone who is short or disabled as when the tailgate is raised by the handle it is quite hard to reach and the door is quite heavy to shut manually.

The ML is not really equipped for 'real' off road use in its standard set up and should you wish to go off road on regular basis you may wish to opt for the Off-Road Pro Package (£1,320) plus you will need AirMATIC air suspension (£1,305.00) which is standard on the ML 450 CDI and ML 500 models.  Which comprises two-stage low-range transfer case with additional ratio, 100% locks on centre and rear differentials, automatic transmission with manual mode, underguard and extended ground clearance adjustment range.
