The new Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG will be premiered at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week.
Mercedes have yet to confirm UK pricing or specification but we expected the GLA 45 AMG to be priced around the same as Audi’s RS Q3 (£43,000), its nearest rival.
The Mercedes Benz GLA is a mid-sized SUV designed to compete with Audi’s Q3 range. It has a footprint of 4.41m (l) x 1.80m (w) x 1.49m (h) and is based same modular MFA platform as the A-Class. Prices start at £ 25,850 for the entry level GLA 200 CDI.
The top-of-the-range GLA 45 AMG is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol turbocharged engine producing 360 hp and capable of delivering 450 Nm of torque. The 0-62 mph time is 4.8 seconds (it even features launch control) and the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Fuel consumption is of 37.6 mpg (NEDC combined) and CO2 emissions are 175 g/km.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission in the GLA 45 AMG features three distinct transmission modes, a double-declutching function dependent on the transmission mode and a RACE START function for optimum acceleration. There is ‘M’ manual mode where you take control and an ‘S’ mode or automatic sports mode. Then there is the ‘C’ mode (Controlled Efficiency) that offers smooth transmission and engine characteristics supported ECO start/stop.
The GLA 45 AMG runs on 19-inch five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish and it fitted with 235/45 R 19 tyres. You can opt for 20-inch 10-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with tyres of size 235/40 R 20 – these are available painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish or painted matte black with high-sheen rim flange.
As you would expect there is a large array of options and bespoke tailoring available with the GLA 45 AMG including distinctive AMG styling. There are options such as the ‘Night package’ comprising privacy windows, black anodised waistline trim strip, silver chrome radiator grille louvres; high-gloss black front splitter, exterior mirrors, side sill panel insert and rear apron trim, two tailpipes with black rectangular trim. Where interior options include performance seats upholstered in Artico man-made leather/Dinamica microfibre for driver and front passenger, with more strongly contoured seat shape for enhanced lateral support and with integral head restraints, red designo safety belts.
