It could be set for production as early as 2014, priced from around £30,000
Mercedes will be showing off their latest concept the GLA at the "Auto Shanghai" Motor Show (21st to 29th April 2013).
Firmly targeted at premium compact SUV buyer’s who are currently swarming to the Range Rover Evoque. The Concept GLA is built around the architecture of the new A- and B-Class models with a foot print of (l) 4383mm by (w) 1978mm and (h) 1579mm high, it is also a similar size. In this concept form it rides on 20-inch wheels, with five-spoke turbine design and are fitted with 255/45 R 20 tyres.
The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA SUV is powered by a 1991 cc four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine outputting 211 hp mated to a 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Although in production we would expect to see the same engine line-up as the new A-Class with the option FWD or AWD.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA will utilize the latest technology including the possibility of laser-beam projectors incorporated into the headlamps. Crazy as it seems the headlamps are not only provide the light to drive by, but are also capable of projecting pictures or films onto a screen or other surface. Any format that can be operated through COMAND Online can serve as a source: pictures or films from a smartphone, the internet, or from a hard drive. The Concept GLA is fitted with two cameras, housed in the front roof rail, which can be used to take 3D images whilst driving. Although this is a concept the idea behind the technology is project information such navigation directions on to the road in the form of arrows – we will have to wait and see if this idea makes production.
We would expect the Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA to go into production priced around the same price as the Evoque, so around £30,000 for the entry-level model with a launch date of early next year.Published 18 April 2013
