Mercedes Benz GLA (2014)

a compact SUV designed as rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1

The Mercedes Benz GLA is a compact SUV designed as rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 – it billed as being as happy with urban living as it is in the country with the ability to go off-road.

The GLA will be premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, with orders being taken from the end of November, prices will be competitive with the Q3 and X1, and therefore prices should start at around £25,000.

Based on the modular MFA platform of the new A Class it has a foot print of (length x width x height 4,417 x 1,804 x 1,494 millimetres) with the option of the permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, which features variable torque distribution which send power between the front and rear axle on demand – normally it sits in front-wheel drive. Models with 4MATIC are equipped with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard.

It maybe compact but it can carry between 421 – 836 litres of cargo, with a low boot sill and the option of an automatic tailgate – the rear seats fold down completely flat.
