Mazda Receives AM Award For 'Carmaker Of The Year 2004'

Published: 8th March 2004
Mazda has been crowned ‘Carmaker of the Year 2004’ at the prestigious AM Awards, known as the Oscars to the automotive industry, at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham.

AM (formerly Automotive Management), a leading trade magazine, selected an independent panel of highly respected industry experts to perform the judging and chose Mazda as the overall winner. Stephen Briers, Editor of AM, explained why Mazda received this highly coveted award:

"Two years ago the Mazda factory took over the UK importership from MCL. That has proved to be the right decision. Sales last year were up 36% to nearly 38,000 cars and Mazda is delivering more value for its dealer network with outstanding models like the Mazda6 and the Mazda RX-8."

After receiving the award from Tim Tozer, automotive director for Mondial Assistance, Phil Waring, Mazda Motors UK’s managing director commented: "This is a really proud moment for Mazda UK and a reflection of the effort which has been made not only by staff within the company but also the dealer network in re-establishing Mazda as a credible brand in the UK."

Three Mazda dealers, Hodgson Mazda in Newcastle, Norton Way Mazda in Letchworth and Brooklyn Mazda in Redditch also had cause for celebration at the prestigious AM Awards with their nominations for the Small/Niche Dealership award.

Hodgson Mazda in Newcastle was voted the winner of the Small/Niche Dealership award. AM judges commented: "Hodgson Newcastle Mazda has survived the ups and downs of the change in importer and is now thriving. Its profits have been reinvested to enable the Hodgson Group to open other dealerships in the city, which is a testament to the strength of the business."

Rob Lindley, sales director for Mazda Motors UK was delighted with the win for Hodgson Newcastle: "The AM Award for Small/Niche Dealership is a reflection of Hodgson Mazda Newcastle’s outstanding performance for the Mazda brand and the great team that Steve Hodgson has put together. Congratulations to Steve and the team."

The AM awards are the latest in a long line of recent accolades achieved by Mazda including: The 2004 Top Gear Award for Best Coupé (Mazda RX-8), Motor Trader Car Franchise of the Year 2004, Warranty Direct’s Most Reliable Car Manufacturer 2003 and two accolades from the What Car? Awards 2004 for Best Coupé (Mazda RX-8) and Best Estate Car (Mazda6 Estate) plus many more.
