The Mazda3 Diesel

MZ-CD Mazda common rail turbo diesel
- a thoroughly modern diesel engine
The Mazda3 1.6-litre turbo diesel is nearly as quiet and smooth operating as its petrol counterparts. Contributing to the car’s excellent refinement are the rigid yet lightweight aluminium cylinder block and a dual-mass flywheel that minimises vibrations.
The engine’s fuel injection system operates at a high pressure of 1,600 bar. Injection is electronically controlled and based on data such as accelerator pedal position and engine speed to provide optimised fuel injection and timing. The system is able to inject atomised fuel through six-hole injectors in response to driving conditions to significantly improve combustion efficiency.
Mazda3’s diesel engine is not only powerful, frugal and quick, it also produces low toxic emissions, and achieves a Euro Stage III emission rating. A major contributor to this rating is its exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. Similar to the system used on the MZR petrol engine, control of the EGR valve is electronic to optimise the mix of exhaust gas and intake air. Mixing inert gases reduces production of NOx, by lowering combustion temperatures.
