Mazda3 MPS: The Ultimate Super-Hatch
Published: 10th April 2007
A six-speed manual gearbox makes driving the Mazda3 MPS even more fun. Despite having a three-shaft design, this compact transmission is almost the same size as the five-speed manual of the standard Mazda3 and, due to wider gear ratios, allows maximum utilization of the car’s higher engine output. The gearbox design ensures precise and clean shift characteristics and low-effort shifting through clearly defined shift travel.
Besides reinforcing the body structure, engineers also gave the Mazda3 MPS a more sporty suspension set up, without degrading ride comfort. Both the MacPherson front suspension and the multi-link rear suspension have higher spring rates, larger stabilizer bars and higher-performance dampers with up to six times more damping force, depending on damper piston speed. The sum of these measures results in a 60 percent reduction in roll.
Engineers also upgraded the brakes to match the increase in power output. Mazda3 MPS’s 320 mm front disc brakes are ventilated, while the rear brakes are 280 mm in diameter. A tandem booster, along with a larger master cylinder, four-channel ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist and Traction Control System (TCS) all contribute to maximum effective braking performance.
Models featuring the Sports Aero kit are equipped with special Eibach springs and dampers that lower the car by 25mm at the front and 10mm at the rear, to elevate the Mazda3 MPS’s already excellent handling to an even higher level. This kit also includes low-drag two‑spoke sports door mirrors and a larger rear sports spoiler.
Fully Specified and Lavishly Equipped
Inside, each Mazda3 MPS has MPS-branded sports seats with black leather cushion and backrest side bolsters and centre sections in black sports cloth with contrasting red stitching. Leather is also used to trim the steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake. Sporty touches include the instrument panel displays (with blackout-finish dials, amber-red/blue lighting and an ‘MPS’ logo), and aluminium pedals and door scuff plates.
