Land Rover has addressed previous build quality issues and implemented over 700 revisions to the 2004 Discovery with hardly a major component remaining from previous models. The materials used are of a very high standard and there were no intrusive rattles to contend with. This workhorse should prove durable and serve you well until you decide it is time for a new one.

Value For Money

At £34,590.00 (including automatic transmission option £1,495.00) the Discovery ES TD5 might seem expensive but it offers a high level of standard equipment. You are also paying for the Land Rover badge and over 50 years of off-road heritage. Diesel models have always fared well on the second hand market but beware of depreciation with the new model on the horizon. This is excellent news for the used buyer but if you are thinking of buying a new Discovery and prefer the current styling ensure that you ask for a discount to reflect the forthcoming Discovery 3.

Overall Opinion

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with the Discovery, so much so that one of our team is seriously considering buying one. If you require true off-road ability we would have no hesitation in recommending the Discovery because it is the original and the best. Having said that if you are thinking of purchasing one for the school run it requires careful consideration such as higher maintenance costs and practicality. The Discovery's image certainly out trumps other 4x4's it is one of the most versatile vehicles on the road - whatever your needs be it the school run, towing your caravan or crossing rough terrain the Discovery delivers with confidence. and more importantly it is made in Britain.
