Sorento Wins 4X4 Magazine 'Car Of The Year 2004'

Kia Sorento

In what has probably been the biggest year ever for 4x4 launches, the Kia Sorento 2.5-litre CRDi turbodiesel has won the coveted title of ‘Car of the Year 2004’, in the annual 4x4 Magazine Awards. The Kia Sorento achieved this accolade ahead of high profile new entrants such as the Volkswagen Touareg and Volvo XC90 and products from more established 4x4 names such as Land Rover, Jeep and Toyota.

One 4x4 Magazine judge summed up the reasons for the Sorento’s success:

"Everyone was struck by how well designed the Kia is, how well put together it is and most importantly how proficient it is in sticky, tricky off-road situations. Yes, there are those who will be put off by the badge, but more fool them, they’re missing out on driving one of the best cars currently found on the market."

Beating off competition from the Mercedes-Benz ML 270, Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, and the Toyota Land Cruiser to win the ‘Large 4x4’ category, the Sorento then went on to beat six other category winners to win the prestigious ‘Car of the Year’ title.

The full test report found in the September issue of 4x4 Magazine concludes:

"Those who are tempted by the Sorento, probably including many newcomers to the sports utility lifestyle, will quickly appreciate the qualities that lift it to the top of our 4x4 of The Year league table – spaciousness, comfort, driving enjoyment, refinement and sheer value for money."

Launched back in February 2003, the Sorento has been an immediate success contributing to Kia’s position as the fastest growing car manufacturer in the UK and across the whole of Europe. The outstanding success of Sorento has led to a minimum 3-month waiting list for the car in the UK.

Paul Williams, Managing Director of Kia Motors (UK) Limited:

"In a sector where image is everything, 4x4 Magazine has proved that customers can purchase a high quality, high spec, sleek and stylish looking SUV without breaking the bank. The efforts to match the Sorento’s quality and performance with the best in the sector has paid off and allowed Kia to compete head to head with high profile, premium brands."
