However, in choosing this option you forego the third row of seats, 4WD and it is only available in Sorento 1 trim.

As I mentioned previously, there is a choice of two engines for the Kia Sorento; the 2.4 petrol unit, which was not previously available in the UK, has been retained for people who prefer it to the diesel. However, in choosing this option you forego the third row of seats, 4WD and it is only available in Sorento 1 trim.

Kia is obviously pushing the new 2.2 diesel engine, which is available in every format; 2- and 4WD, 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. This turbo-charged, common-rail unit is a replacement for the previous 2.5 and is much lighter, which means better fuel economy. With so many transmission permutations I'll concentrate on the figures for the Kia Sorento test car; that is to say the 2.2 4WD in KX-2 trim with the manual gearbox.

The official results show that this particular Kia Sorento is capable of returning 32.8mpg on the urban cycle, 52.3mpg on the extra-urban and 42.8 on the combined with emissions of 174g/km. So, the numbers are not bad but, if the test week was any gauge, these figures will be just out of reach.

Thanks to outputs of 194bhp at 3,800rpm and 422Nm between 1,800 and 2,500rpm, it takes 9.6 seconds to get from standstill to 62mph and the top speed for all Kia Sorentos is 118mph. Motorway travel finds the Sorento free-rolling but that sensation has more to do with the light steering. Urban journeys show off the car's great all round visibility although the condition of the roads following the hard winter, also serves to show just how firm the suspension is.

The off-road capability may be lessened but it is still there, even though the Kia Sorento is intended to appeal to business users. Prices range from £20,495 to £29,795, which is also not bad especially when you consider that it isn't lacking in goodies and there is a 7-year warranty thrown in for good measure., which means that Kia are prepared to put their money were their mouth is and you can't say fairer than that.
