New Jaguar S-TYPE Sets The Pace On Pricing

The new S-TYPE also offers an even greater range of styling, comfort and convenience features. These include five new wheel styles, Adaptive Cruise Control and the option of Front Park Assist.

But the most exciting change for 2004 is the arrival of an all-new twin-turbo V6 Diesel engine which complements the existing four petrol engines.

The four-cam, 24-valve, twin turbo V6 features ‘next generation’ common rail direct injection and super-fast piezo-electric injector operation. Maximum power from the 2.7 litre engine is 206bhp (153kw) DIN, putting the S-TYPE ahead of all but one directly comparable rivals. Torque peaks at a heady 435Nm (320 lbft) DIN, which is actually higher than the torque of the S-TYPE's naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine, yet the diesel has 47 per cent lower fuel consumption. More crucially still, 80 per cent of this torque is available from just 1,500rpm, all the way through to 4000rpm.

It is this combination of substantial power and torque that delivers the refinement and huge mid-range flexibility that make the new S-TYPE Diesel relaxed when cruising and yet pleasingly rapid cross-country – both characteristics true to the Jaguar tradition. A six-speed manual gearbox as standard or optional six-speed automatic transmission allows buyers to choose their method of making progress.

And making progress is something at which the new S-TYPE Diesel is very accomplished. The benchmark 0-60mph sprint is dismissed in 8.1 seconds (8.2 seconds for the automatic) and has a maximum speed in excess of 140mph.

Environmental challenges are also addressed. CO2 emissions of 189g/km bring accompanying tax benefits, while combined fuel economy (manual) is 40mpg; in the extra urban cycle this rises to 49.7mpg.

The new S-TYPE petrol versions will be available to UK customers from this month, while the diesel versions go on sale from June.
