New Punto On Sale In Britain | Part Six

Automatic Door Locks

Automatic door locks activate on all doors as soon as the new Punto reaches 12 mph – an important safety and security feature.

Isofix Mountings

The two outer rear seats feature Isofix mountings for the easy and safe installation of child seats.

Suspension

The new Fiat Punto employs the proven independent MacPherson strut front suspension configuration, and a lightweight torsion beam axle to the rear.

For the 2003 model, Fiat engineers have raised the Punto's ride height by 10 mm and lengthened the shock absorbers' stroke to improve bump absorption. The springs' bump stops and rubber bushes have also been retuned to avoid compromising Punto's crisp handling, whilst offering a more comfortable ride.

Engines and Transmissions

New Punto goes on sale with the widest, most comprehensive range of engines and transmissions available in B-segment today.

Three brand new engines make their first appearance; a revolutionary 1.3 litre 16-valve 70 bhp Multijet common rail direct injection turbodiesel; a Multijet 1.9 litre 8-valve 100 bhp common rail direct injection turbodiesel, and a spirited FIRE 1.4 litre 16-valve 95 bhp petrol unit.

Four further engines complete the Punto range: revised, 60 and 80 bhp versions of the reliable FIRE 1.2 litre 8 and 16-valve petrol units, a powerful 130 bhp 16-valve 1.8 litre petrol engine, and the proven 85 bhp, 1.9 litre JTD Unijet common rail direct injection turbodiesel.

Transmissions comprise a 6-speed and three 5-speed manual gearboxes, as well as a choice of two sophisticated clutchless transmissions: Speedgear is a continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission with selectable, 6-speed sequential, manual changes. Dualogic is a clutchless, 5-speed sequential manual shift with a selectable, fully automatic mode.
