The new Stilo MP Wagon, which goes on sale here early next year, is one of the most spacious cars in its class, and its generous 510 litre luggage compartment can be expanded to 1480 litres with the rear seats folded down. The new car is taller than the Stilo 3 and 5-door hatchbacks – a feature that alters the position of the driver’s seat in relation to the ground, providing easier access.
Convenient access to the interior has been a design priority, and it is also possible to adapt the interior space to changing needs because the front seat folds down, and the two rear seats can slide backwards and forwards and recline independently.
The new Wagon’s luggage compartment has a notably low loading height. The regular-shaped boot lining also ensures that all available space can be used to the full. The tailgate is opened with ease by a convenient central handle located beneath the number plate, and it incorporates an innovative opening rear window. By pressing a switch above the number plate light, it can be raised or lowered.
The new Stilo MP Wagon will go on sale here with a choice of four power units: two petrol and two common rail turbodiesels that range from 80-133 bhp. All are mated to 5-speed gearboxes.
The 1.6 16v develops its 103 bhp maximum power at 5750 rpm, and maximum torque (107 lb.ft) at 4000 rpm. A Fiat Stilo MP Wagon equipped with this engine can reach 113 mph and accelerate from 0-62 mph in 11.4 seconds. It records 37 mpg over a combined cycle.
The 1.8 16v develops a maximum power output of 133 bhp at 6400 rpm, and torque of 119 lb.ft at 3500 rpm. It can propel the Fiat Stilo Wagon to 124 mph and allows the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 10.8 seconds. Fuel consumption over a combined cycle is 29.2 mpg.
The 80 bhp 1.9 JTD generates 144 lb.ft of torque at 1500 rpm. A Fiat Stilo Wagon equipped with this engine has a top speed of 105 mph, accelerates from 0-62 mph in 13.8 seconds, and records 50 mpg over a combined cycle.
The 115 bhp 1.9 JTD differs from the 80 bhp version in that it is equipped with an intercooler and a variable geometry turbine. It delivers maximum torque of 188 lb.ft at 2000 rpm. In this case, the top speed achieved is 118 mph. It accelerates from 0-62 mph in 11.2 seconds and consumes 43 mpg over a combined cycle.
Two efficient, tried and tested layouts work very effectively in the new Wagon due to the attributes of Stilo’s new chassis. The front features an independent MacPherson strut configuration, refined through the adoption of numerous improvements. The rear end features a semi-independent set-up incorporating an open section torsion beam, coil springs, dual telescopic hydraulic dampers and an anti-roll bar.
The Stilo MP Wagon sets new class standards for equipment and high-tech features. The net result is a car of substance designed to guarantee customers strong performance in all fields, without cutting corners.
• Safety – On the passive safety front, the Stilo MP Wagon is equipped with up to eight airbags, the front two being Multistage. As far as active safety is concerned, the car boasts disc brakes all round, and offers the best braking and traction control systems available today: ABS anti-lock brakes complete with an electronic brakeforce distributor (EBD); ASR to limit wheelspin during acceleration; and EVA and HBA systems to help the driver to brake at maximum retardation during emergency stops. A sophisticated ESP unit is also available to control dynamic stability electronically in corners. The options list includes xenon headlights that offer significantly better visibility than conventional beams.
• Telematics – CONNECT, an innovative on-line system that connects the driver to an extensive range of services, will also become available on the Stilo MP Wagon. CONNECT is complemented by a Dual Band GSM phone with WAP internet access, GPS localisation and a navigation system, in addition to a CD sound system that can play MP3 music files. The system is designed to be managed by voice commands and displayed on a 7” wide screen.
• Next Generation Interior – the Fiat Stilo MP Wagon offers a new approach to interior design, making full use of the space allocated to passengers and luggage. This could be described as a ‘new generation’ interior because it packs all the practicality and flexibility of an MPV into a normal station wagon. This result is made possible by a sliding split rear seat that reclines and tilts independently. This facility makes the luggage compartment hugely versatile because it can offer a different load capacity, and even a different shape, as and when required.
In the Fiat Stilo MP Wagon, the rear of the passenger compartment can be adapted to alter leg-room and backrest position, as required, for maximum occupant comfort. Other assets include a ski tunnel, various closed storage compartments, and a front seat that folds down to form a table – either to accommodate long loads or act as a work surface.Published 30 October 2002
