Fiat Auto UK has teamed up with Italian pasta sauce Company, Sacla’, to sign award winning chef, Phil Vickery to cater for its three-car team on this year’s Wales Rally GB (16-19 September), Britain’s showcase World Rally Championship qualifier.
The move illustrates Fiat’s determination to leave no stone unturned in the preparation of its first manufacturer-backed entry into a World Rally Championship event for over 20 years.
Its team of three exciting young drivers will be treated to Michelin-starred quality fare by one of Britain’s most talented chefs. A regular contributor to ITV’s ‘This Morning’ and a frequent guest on ‘Ready Steady Cook’, Vickery boasts more than 25 years’ experience at the top of the hotel and catering trade.
For the gruelling four-day event, Vickery has worked together with food experts at Sacla’ to devise a menu that comprises both high carbohydrate and protein content, whilst still providing a platform to showcase his gastronomic flair.
- Fusilli Pasta bound in a rich creamy pesto & gorgonzola cheese sauce
- Penne Pasta with ‘Poppettine’ Meatballs with Sacla’ Hot Pepper & Mozzarella Sauce
- Baked Rabbit with Pancetta in a Sacla’ Tomato & Chilli Sauce
- Grilled Lamb Noisettes with Sacla’ Chargrilled Aubergine Pesto
- Arancini Ripieni – Deep fried stuffed Risotto balls
Vickery, a sports enthusiast, is looking forward to the challenge of swapping his spotless, state-of-the-art kitchen for the sparse facilities of the Fiat team trailer, and its four-burner hob. He comments:
‘I can’t think of a more challenging cooking environment than a rally, which necessarily involves remote locations; so into the wilds we go!’
Leon Pesticcio (22, Bridgend), who will head the Fiat driver line-up, with six Junior World Rally Championship events under his belt, was excited to hear the news but keen not to upset his regular on-event meal provider:
‘My mum, Sharon, usually travels with us and prepares all the team meals. It goes without saying that Phil’s got his work cut out to improve on her food. But word has it that he’s quite handy!’
The best news for rally spectators at this year’s Wales Rally GB is that Phil Vickery will be cooking for them too. Throughout Friday (Sept 17) at the Felindre service area, near Swansea, Vickery will be producing tempting authentic Italian antipasti (canapés) for visitors to sample whilst they watch the Fiat team’s frenetic servicing activity on its three Stilo Cup cars at close quarters.Published 4 September 2004
