The new Fiat MPV’s radical, stylish interior design offers unprecedented levels of quality and refinement in this segment, with a choice of high grade upholstery and carpeting, chrome highlight detailing, and a slush moulded dashboard ensuring an even, soft-touch surface finish.
Special emphasis has been placed on driver ergonomics. A multi-adjustable driver’s seat allied to both extensive reach and rake adjustment of the steering wheel offers a comfortable driving position, placing all tactile, rubber-coated switchgear within easy reach. The fascia has been designed as a sweeping arch, spanning from pillar to pillar in a slender curve overhanging the central rev counter, speedometer and fuel and water temperature gauges (rev counter and speedometer are set either side of a 7" screen when CONNECT NAV+ is fitted).
Below the stereo control panel – which may be concealed behind a folding panel – a centre console projection houses the climate control system, CONNECT NAV controls (if fitted), the cable link short-throw gear lever and, below, a refrigerated compartment for three cans. The centre console placement of the gear lever, and the location of the handbrake between driver’s seat and door, frees up the floorspace between the front seats to allow passage to the rear of the vehicle without the need to step outside.
The new Ulysse’s sliding rear doors are light to operate and offer the widest possible aperture into the passenger compartment, even when the car is hemmed into a tight parking space. They also allow for the easy removal and replacement of the rear seats.
Passengers may open the sliding rear doors electronically from the outside via the key fob remote control, and inside from both the driver’s seat and the second seating tier. When the vehicle is moving, the doors will not open electronically. Safety stop systems prevent the doors from closing accidentally when the car is parked on a steep incline, and from hitting the fuel flap when it is open. Electric sliding side doors are optional on Eleganza and Prestigio versions, but unavailable on Dynamic versions.
The wide tailgate is operated with ease by a convenient, electrically operated central handle located above the numberplate. Gas struts raise the tailgate to a sufficient height to allow an adult to stand comfortably beneath it, and the top of the rear bumper is sheathed to prevent scratching to paintwork when loading the luggage compartment.
Multi-Purpose Seating FlexibilityOn Eleganza and Prestigio versions, both front seats may be rotated through 180 degrees when the Ulysse is parked. The driver’s seat on these versions offers height and lumbar adjustment, with the option of electric adjustment, heating elements, and a 2-position memory which includes door mirror settings. Both front seats have storage boxes beneath their base, and seatbacks containing an oddments pocket and aircraft-style trays with cupholders for second row passengers.
Astern, five generous, 470 mm wide, individual seats are fitted as standard. Seating for 6, via a third row bench seat with a best-in-class width of 1420 mm, is optional in Dynamic and Eleganza trim levels, whilst Prestigio models feature four ‘Captain’s Chair’-style seats with armrests in the second and third tiers. All individual seats slide backwards and forwards through 150 mm to optimise either leg or luggage room. All rear seatbacks adjust for rake and are fitted with adjustable head restraints and 3-point, inertia reel seatbelts. There are ISOFIX child seat connections on all second and third row outer seats.
Any one of the rear seats may be folded down and flipped over with a single movement, folded flat for use as a table, or folded over and removed altogether from the car, leaving a completely flat loadspace floor. Additionally, up to four seats may be folded over and stored in single file along either side of the cabin, maximising luggage capacity without the need to leave seats behind.
