Ferrari Enzo Goes For Over Half A Million On eBay

A Ferrari Enzo, one of the world's most desirable and rarest cars, became the most expensive ever sold on eBay Motors in Europe when bidding closed on eBay's Swiss site at CHF1,200,050 (£544,000) on Saturday, 23 October 2004. There was a furious bidding war in the final days of the auction and the winning bid was just CHF50 (£22) higher than the second-placed bidder. Bidding started at just CHF 1, and there were 84 bids in total. The new owner is Swiss - although he made his winning bid while in Brazil.

Just 399 of the V12, 600 bhp cars have ever been made. This model had just 400 km on the clock.

Clare Gilmartin, head of eBay Motors UK, said:

"This shows the breadth of items for sale eBay now attracts across Europe. It also demonstrates that eBay sellers are listing with us to attract international buyers for that 'must-have' item.

"This sale, the largest in Europe, compares to the Gulfstream Jet, the most expensive item ever sold on eBay globally, which went for $4.9 million and Margaret Thatcher's handbag, the most expensive UK item at £103,000.

"However, even those sales are dwarfed by the fact that around the world, $10.7 billion worth of cars were sold on eBay in the period between July and September 2004. All of which goes to show that if you are in the market for a car,, where a car sells every four minutes, is one of the places you should look."
