Ferrari's 4499cc V8 engine as found in the Ferrari 458 Italia has won in two categories in the 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards, being named Best Performance Engine and also won the Above 4-litre category. The jury consisted of 76 motoring journalists from 26 countries. They assess engineering excellence in engines, focusing on driveability, performance, economy and refinement. The Ferrari 458 Italia's engine was also recognised for its unmistakable sound.

The V8 engine reaches a maximum 9,000 rpm which is a first for a road car, with a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and maximum power output of 570CV. The results in a power output of 127CV/litre.

540NM of torque is available at 6000rpm, with over 80% available from 3250rpm which allows for rapid pick-up from all revs. The specific torque of 120NM/litre is also another record.

Engine component design has been influenced by racing technology - namely F1 - for maximum fluid-dynamic efficiency, to achieve both performance and fuel consumption objectives, as well as meeting international emissions restrictions. With the HELE (High Emotions Low Emissions) system, the 750CV V8 produces a best in class figures of 275g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption is 11.8l/100km (ECE + EUDC combined cycle).
