Citroen is broadening the appeal of the UK’s most popular MPV, the Xsara Picasso, by launching two new models which bring an automatic gearbox, mated to a new 2.0 litre petrol engine, to the range for the very first time.
Available in SX and Exclusive trim levels, the new automatic models are equipped with a four-speed sequential gearbox that adapts automatically to driving style and conditions of use. Offering both convenience and enjoyment, the new automatic gearbox also allows drivers to change gear manually if they so prefer.
And driving enjoyment will certainly be an added attraction, with the new models featuring the most powerful engine ever fitted to the Xsara Picasso - a 137hp petrol unit. Powering the car from 0 to 62 mph in just 10.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 119mph, this new unit is still capable of returning some 33mpg on the combined cycle.
Both new models are equipped as standard with cruise control, ESP and EBA, the first time that these features have been available on the Xsara Picasso. The cruise control is operated via new, more ergonomic steering column controls that are now fitted across the range.
Citroen is currently offering £2,000 cashback on all Xsara Picassos, making the 2.0i Auto SX and 2.0i Auto Exclusive available from just £13,995 and £14,995 respectively (R.R.P. £15,995 and £16,995). Such competitive pricing should ensure healthy sales for this new model, especially as automatic transmissions account for up to 15% of some rivals’ sales.
This news comes hot on the heels of another successful twelve months for the Xsara Picasso. Having just enjoyed its second year as the country’s most popular MPV, ahead of the Vauxhall Zafira and Renault Scenic, the Xsara Picasso has also recently seen its total UK sales pass the 100,000 mark.Published 22 January 2003
