Citroen C8 - Growing Up In The World

Published 19 October 2002 Melanie Carter

Citroen has now confirmed equipment levels and indicative prices for the C8, the Company's highly acclaimed newcomer to the MPV sector. Set to go on sale in the UK early next year, with prices from around £18,300, the Citroen C8 range will offer four trim levels and four engines and will appeal to drivers short-listing executive good looks, loads of space and bags of practicality.

The Citroen C8 boasts a dynamic profile, with its smart lines flowing across the bonnet and over the vast panoramic windscreen before sweeping along the high roofline to the wide tailgate, which is flanked by tall, stylish tail lamps. This profile is complemented by the C8's gently rising waistline, while indicators neatly integrated into the door mirrors and robust, chrome effect styling touches, such as the grille, two-in-one door handles and chunky tailgate handle, complete the look.

Inside the distinctive cabin, the focus of attention is on the contemporary lines of the dashboard which arch across the windscreen and frame three fluorescent-style dials. The result is a clutter-free, light and bright driving position that allows the driver to concentrate on the road while providing easy access to the dashboard-mounted gearlever, air conditioning controls, cup holders and air conditioned storage compartment.

Longer, wider and taller than the Synergie which it replaces, the C8 is not only one of the most spacious vehicles in its class, with a maximum load volume of 2,948 litres, but it also offers passengers easy access into and through the cabin thanks to the flat floor, high roof and unobtrusive positioning of the handbrake and dashboard-mounted gear lever.

The availability of remote-controlled twin electric sliding side doors further facilitates access. A new, more flexible seating configuration with patented Quickfix instant anchoring system allows each of the rear seats to be easily removed, or slid on rails, whilst the two front seats can be swivelled for business or recreational use.

Almost 60 different storage areas help keep the cabin tidy, while all occupants can benefit from the individually controlled multi-zone air conditioning system. In addition, three electrically operated sunroofs with integral sunblinds help flood the cabin with natural light.

Citroen's digital multiplex technology brings a host of benefits to the driver and passengers, making the C8 easy to live with. Light sensitive headlamps, automatic windscreen wipers, a low tyre pressure warning and speed indexing of the stereo volume leave the driver free to concentrate on the road ahead, while other features available include 'guide-me-home' headlamps, rear parking sensors and remote control operation of the sliding doors, sunroofs, and windows.

The Citroen C8 sets new benchmarks for active and passive safety standards in the MPV sector, with the introduction of two full-length side window airbags, offering unprecedented protection to the occupants of all three rows. As well as ABS, EBD and ESP, passengers can benefit from EBA, hazard warning lights that operate automatically on heavy braking and low tyre pressure warning.

Helping to keep all occupants safe, the Citroen C8 is fitted with 3-point seatbelts all round, with pyrotechnic pretensioners and force limiters fitted to most seats. All models also boast a reinforced structure with built-in crumple zones, high yield strength cross-beams and a ring of steel rollover protection system.

Buyers opting for a petrol engine can choose between the 138hp 2.0i 16V, which can be mated to a sequential auto-adaptive automatic gearbox, or for the first time in a Citroen a 160hp 2.2i 16V unit. Diesel fans can enjoy either a 110hp 2.0 16V HDi engine or the more powerful 130hp 2.2 16V HDi option, with both versions fitted with the Company's award-winning Particulate Filter that virtually eliminates all particulate emissions.

The C8 will offer four trim levels - LX, SX, Exclusive and Exclusive Captain Chair.

The Citroen C8 Range

Citroen C8 LX

Even the entry-level model, the LX, is loaded with high specification equipment to keep the driver and occupants comfortable and relaxed en-route, while stylish touches inside and out, hint at the attention to detail and quality build of this people carrier.

Style touches include body colour painted bumper skirts and door mirrors plus aluminium effect door handles and a blacked-out tailgate window. A comfortable driving position is made possible by the standard specification of a height adjustable seat and a height and tilt adjustable steering wheel. All of the rear seats can be easily removed or repositioned thanks to Citroen's patented Quickfix instant anchoring system.

On the move, neat touches such as variable power assisted steering, speed sensitive windscreen wipers, automatic rear wiper function and a multi-function display with on-board trip computer makes driving C8 relaxed and hassle-free.

Automatic digital dual zone air conditioning, electric front windows, remote control central locking with deadlocks, courtesy lights throughout the cabin plus a radio/CD player with steering wheel mounted controls, speed sensitive volume control and an air conditioned drinks cooler in the central console further accentuate the quality ambience of this model.

And helping to make this one of the safest cars in the class, the C8 boasts a 'first' with four airbags, plus two curtain airbags that stretch the full length of the vehicle. All C8 models also feature ABS with EBD and EBA plus seven 3-point seatbelts and Isofix child seat anchorage.

Citroen C8 SX

The Citroen C8 SX adds remote control operated twin electric sliding doors, electric middle windows, rain-sensitive windscreen wipers, automatic retractable door mirrors and guide-me-home headlamps. The SX models also feature tri-zone digital air conditioning, an anti-theft alarm, the availability of an automatic gearbox on the 2.0i 16V petrol version and, on certain models, ESP with traction control.

Other additions over the LX model include a folding child surveillance mirror, swivelling front seats with adjustable, folding armrests, sunblinds on the middle, rear and tailgate windows as well as the option of three electrically operated slide and tilt sunroofs.

Citroen C8 Exclusive

Moving up to the Exclusive model, the Citroen C8 range introduces the option of the new 2.2i 16V petrol engine for the first time. Also new to the Exclusive model are rear parking sensors and stylish touches such as an 'aluminium' effect rear spoiler with integrated roof bars, alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel, while ESP with traction control, cruise control, electric and heated front seats with position memory, a low tyre pressure warning and xenon headlamps with washer jets are standard.

Citroen C8 Exclusive Captain Chair

The top-of-the-range model comes with six, leather-upholstered chairs, each fully adjustable and equipped with folding armrests to maximise individual comfort. In addition, all models offer three slide and tilt sunroofs with retractable sunblinds as standard, along with blackout side windows in rows two and three.
