Citroen is giving family motoring the executive touch with the introduction of the C8, a stylish and spacious people carrier that offers new standards of comfort, practicality, technology and safety. On sale in France from this week, the C8 is set to arrive in the UK towards the end of the year, with prices for the new model likely to start from around £18,000.
Inside and out, the Citroen C8 blends innovative design features and creative styling touches to produce a distinctive look. And with more than 65% of the main body parts unique to the C8, it is also significantly different to its Peugeot and Fiat stablemates.
The Citroen C8 boasts a dynamic profile, with its flowing lines curving across the bonnet and over the vast panoramic windscreen before sweeping along the high roofline to the wide tailgate, which is flanked by tall, stylish tail lamps. This profile is complemented by the C8’s gently rising waistline, while indicators neatly integrated into the door mirrors and robust, chrome effect styling touches, such as the grille, two-in-one door handles and chunky tailgate handle complete the look.
Inside the cabin, the focus of attention is on the contemporary lines of the dashboard which arch across the windscreen and frame three distinctive displays. The result is a clutter-free, light and bright dashboard that allows the driver to concentrate on the road ahead while providing easy access to the gearlever, air conditioning controls, cup holders and removable ashtray.
Set to replace the Synergie, which has outsold the Peugeot 806 and Fiat Ulysse in the UK for the last four full years, the C8 is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, ensuring that it is one of the most spacious vehicles in its class and helping to make life on board extremely comfortable and practical. The availability of twin electric sliding side doors that can be operated manually or by remote control, together with the flat floor and absence of a centre console, facilitates access into and through the vehicle.
The Citroen C8’s flexible seating configuration offers up to eight comfortable seats. Thanks to the patented Quickfix instant anchoring system each of the rear seats can be easily removed or repositioned on rails, whilst the two front seats can be swivelled to face the rear for business or recreational use.
Almost 60 different storage areas help keep the cabin tidy, while all occupants can benefit from the individually controlled four-zone air conditioning system. In addition, three electrically operated sunroofs with integrated sunblinds help flood the cabin with natural light and can be operated from both the front and rear of the vehicle.
And the versatility of the C8 is underlined by the numerous neat touches as diverse as an optional DVD with large drop-down colour screen, black-out windows and fold-away child surveillance mirror, together ensuring that the car appeals to executive users and family users alike.
Citroen’s digital multiplex technology brings a host of benefits to the driver and passengers, making the C8 easy to live with. Light sensitive headlamps, automatic windscreen wipers, a low tyre pressure warning and speed indexing of the stereo volume leave the driver free to concentrate on the road ahead, while other features available include ‘guide-me-home’ headlamps, rear parking sensors and remote control operation of the sliding doors, sunroofs, windows and retractable door mirrors.
The Citroen C8 range in the UK will be powered by a choice of four engines. Buyers opting for a petrol engine can choose between the 138HP 2.0i 16V or, for the very first time in a Citroen, a 160HP 2.2i 16V unit, while diesel fans can enjoy either a 109HP 2.0 16V HDi engine or the more powerful 130HP 2.2 16V HDi option. Both diesel versions are fitted with the Company’s award-winning Particulate Filter that virtually eliminates all particulate emissions.
The Citroen C8 sets new benchmarks for active and passive safety standards in the MPV sector. As well as ABS, EBD and ESP, passengers can now benefit from EBA, hazard warning lights that operate automatically on heavy braking and a low tyre pressure warning.
In addition, the availability of six airbags, including two side window airbags, offers unprecedented protection to the occupants of all three rows.
Further helping to keep all occupants safe, the Citroen C8 is fitted with 3-point seatbelts all round, with pyrotechnic pretensioners and force limiters fitted to the front two seats as well as the external seats in row two. All C8 models also boast a reinforced structure with built-in crumple zones, high yield strength cross-beams and a ring of steel rollover protection system.
Managing Director of Citroen UK Ltd, Alain Favey, said: "Citroen has already established itself as the class-leader in the rapidly growing MPV sector, thanks notably to the best-selling Xsara Picasso and Berlingo Multispace. The arrival of the Citroen C8 will help us to increase this popularity still further."Published 26 June 2002
