The remarkable Citroen C3 Pluriel is set to wow the crowds at the Birmingham NEC with its own absolutely unique offering. Featuring a highly innovative design that offers up to five separate configurations, the C3 Pluriel is the ultimate around town, down at the beach, go anywhere supermini.
Based on the recently launched C3, in its first incarnation the C3 Pluriel Saloon is a practical everyday supermini, offering plenty of interior space, four seats and a boot capacity of 267 litres, but with an adventurous side.
At the touch of a button it can be transformed into the C3 Pluriel Panoramic as the side windows, minus a central pillar, are lowered, and the soft top is fully retracted. The sunroof and rear window can then be neatly folded away under the boot floor to create an open top car – the C3 Pluriel Cabriolet.
With the minimum of fuss, the strong, yet light, roof arches can be unlocked and removed effortlessly to create the C3 Pluriel Spider for that unadulterated ‘wind-in-the-hair’ driving experience, while the rain-resistant seats can cope with even the changeable British weather. Finally, with the rear seats folded flat and the boot lid opened downwards, it becomes the C3 Pluriel Spider Pick-up – ideal for loading long and awkward shaped objects.
Inside and out the C3 Pluriel features curvy, stylish looks, just like the C3 supermini, but with extra touches in keeping with the car’s fun and funky character. For example there is body colour coded trim both on the doors, which are equipped with curved, brushed steel bars, as well as the seatbacks, which feature useful stowage nets.
And, just like the C3, multiplex electrics are featured throughout the C3 Pluriel, bringing all the benefits of night-sensitive headlamps, rain-sensitive windscreen wipers and automatic activation of the hazard lights on heavy braking. In addition, new functions specific to the C3 Pluriel, such as management of the air conditioning and airflow, and deactivation of the rear window heater, have also been introduced.
Special consideration has been paid to occupant comfort, with the multi-layer design of the full length, full width sunroof ensuring that wind noise is kept to a minimum. In addition, a wind deflector redirects air to avoid noisy and uncomfortable buffeting when the sunroof, which can be retracted to one of eight pre-set positions, is open.
The Citroen C3 Pluriel’s extra stiff body shell combines with the specially designed and strengthened arches and windscreen pillars, plus reinforced seat backs and headrests, to help offer extremely high levels of occupant protection in the event of an impact or rollover. All four seatbelts are fitted with pre-tensioners with force-limiters, while the rear seats are equipped with Isofix child seat anchorage points.
Available in a single trim level, the C3 Pluriel comes with variable-assistance electric power steering for pinsharp steering and a choice of two petrol engines, a 75hp 1.4i unit and a 110hp 1.6i 16V version, the latter equipped with Citroen’s acclaimed Formula 1 style paddle change ‘SensoDrive’ gearbox.Published 4 October 2002
