It is better than you would think....

Safety

The Citroen Berlingo was tested by Euro NCAP in 2014 and was awarded disappointing three-stars out of a possible five. It scored 56% for adult occupant, 74% child occupant, 63% pedestrian and 48% safety assist. Which compares to the Volkswagen Golf SV that was tested in 2014, which scored five-stars, scored 87% for adult occupant, 85% child occupant, 62% pedestrian and 73% for safety assist.

Standard safety equipment includes ABS with electronic brake force distribution and assist, electronic stability assist. There are driver and front passenger airbags and as this was an XTR model there are front lateral airbags. The rear two outer seats have child seat ISOFix anchorage points.

Infotainment

Our test car was fitted with satellite navigation (eMyWay) which is an £750 optional extra – it is clear but it does not offer full post code entry which is why we would not recommend it unless you want a plumbed in system.

On the audio front you get a single slot CD player with an FM/AM radio tuner it also supports Bluetooth streaming and there is an auxiliary/iPod connector with nearby 12v socket. There is also Bluetooth connectivity to enable hands-free mobile telephone operation.

What We Liked
  • It is better than you would think
  • The cavernous flexible space
  • Easy to live with
  • Not too bad to drive
What We Disliked
  • Expensive purchase price
  • Thick ‘B’ Pillar hampers over shoulder vision
  • Some safety equipment an option
  • Euro NCAP Results
Conclusion

To be honest we had some pre-conceived ideas about the Berlingo Multispace and they were soon put to rest. It might not be the most dynamic of vehicles but it drives and handles well. Performance is perfectly acceptable and it is very practical for both the family and pet owner – with hard wearing surfaces and plenty of storage space. Its Achilles heel is the price, the top of the range model we were testing cost £20,185 with the extras – we would advise you look at the mid-range models or living without the options although the   Modutop is a sensible addition.
