Chrysler 300C Review

For the saloon model there is a choice of two engines - a 215 bhp 3.0 V6 CRD diesel and a 425 bhp petrol 6.1 V8 HEMI engine. The 300C touring is now only available with the 3.0 V6 CRD engine.
Our test car was the Chrysler 300C saloon fitted with the 3.0 V6 CRD diesel engine which is mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox.
Despite the formal separation of the Daimler Chrysler brands - the 3.0 CRD engine is based on the latest Mercedes-Benz engine technology. It produces 215 bhp and delivers 376 lb/ft of torque between 1600 rpm and 2800 rpm. Which is enough to propel the 300C from 0-62 mph in 7.6 second and on to a top speed of 143 mph.
Even at idle when cold the 300C is quiet and once on the move your ears are going to forget that you are driving a diesel. Power delivery is smooth throughout the rev range and only occasionally does the five speed automatic box snatch at the transmission to spoil the 300C’s good manners. You can manually (sequentially) change gear by tapping the gear lever but to be honest you are only going to use this when you need fine control, for instance when descending steep hills, etc.
Chrysler quotes a combined fuel consumption figure of 34.9 mpg, urban 26.2 mpg and an extra urban figure of 42.8 mpg. Overall our mixed touring figure which comprised urban and country road use hovered around the 29 mpg mark.
The 300C can be pushed quite hard before it complains even on demanding ‘B’ roads, although you do have to consider its ample girth. The steering does not really give you the feedback to be too over enthusiastic. The ride can be on the choppy side especially at lower speeds preferring smooth tarmac motorways to poorer surfaced UK ‘B’ roads.
