The New Daewoo Lacetti - Safety Features | Part Three

The New Daewoo Lacetti

Chevrolet Lacetti

Safety: Stable Passenger Compartment, Full Range of Safety Features

The reason for the Lacetti’s comparatively low weight despite its high torsional rigidity and crash stability is the large percentage of high-strength and extra high-strength steel used, accounting for 40 per cent of the bodyshell weight. The five-door Lacetti’s stable passenger compartment is equipped with a comprehensive range of safety features. Two front and two side airbags afford optimum passenger protection. There are five three-point safety belts with belt force limiters at the front. ISOFIX fittings are standard on the outer seats of the rear bench to attach child safety seats. With their three-layer structure, the sturdy bumpers can withstand minor collisions at up to 5 mph without damage.

European Chassis Set-up for a Comfortable, Quiet Ride

One of the targets set by the Lacetti development team was to measure up against the very best in the market segment in terms of ride comfort and particularly in preventing noise and vibration. That is why this new front-wheel drive vehicle has independent suspension on both front and rear axles. The chassis settings of the European versions were also modified based on intensive development and testing in the UK to meet the demands and preferences of pan-European customers.

The new Lacetti features MacPherson struts with gas-pressure dampers on all four wheels. An A-frame arm at the front and two additional wishbones and a trailing arm at the rear ensure precise wheel control. The European Lacetti has approximately 10 per cent higher spring rates and firmer dampers than its Korean counterpart. The standard anti-roll bars have also been modified. Depending on the equipment level, the Lacetti comes with 15-inch steel or light alloy wheels and 195/55-15 tyres. Four disc brakes ensure powerful braking performance. The internally ventilated brakes have a diameter of 256 mm at the front and 258 mm at the rear. A state-of-the-art four-channel ABS from Bosch is standard on every model. There is also an integrated electronic brake-power distribution system.

Clear and simple model range with high equipment levels

The model range is simple and clearly structured. Even more comfortable than the entry model, the Lacetti 1.4SE, is the Lacetti 1.6SX. On the horizon is a flagship 1.8 litre Lacetti which will be fully equipped with extra comfort and many additional features. This model will be revealed at Motor Show Live in May 2004.
