The all-new Daewoo Kalos is revealed for the first time in the UK market. Initially available as a five-door hatchback, the Kalos was designed by the renowned styling house of Italdesign in Turin. The new Kalos will be one of the biggest small cars on the market. Within its compact size - its overall length is just 3.8 metres - it has a wheelbase of 2.48 metres, one of the longest in its class, enabling the package to offer class-leading space utilisation. The high roofline also provides above-average headroom, particularly for rear seat passengers.
"With its unmistakable, appealing styling, the Kalos represents the new start of the company," says Andy Carroll, designated Managing Director of the new GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company (GM DAT) in the UK. "In addition to its fresh, attractive design and agile handling, like all Daewoo products Kalos will offer excellent value for money."
Short front and rear overhangs and the pronounced shoulder line are key characteristics of the expressive and aerodynamically efficient styling. The Kalos is designed to appeal to the young and young at heart and originates in the renowned Turin studios of Italdesign, led by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Small details creating a lasting visual impression are, for example, the indicators, unusually placed under the headlamps and the sculptured lines in the rear side panels, leading to the flared wheelarches.
The style of the glass area includes an additional small window in the C pillar, not only giving rear passengers a wider view but also distinguishing the profile of the car. The elegant and balanced proportions of the rear of the car are aided by the large rear window, which also contributes a light and airy feel to the interior. Inside the passenger compartment, the Kalos is designed to be fresh and contemporary, achieving a very positive response from the style clinics.
Initially, the Kalos will be available in the UK with an efficient 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. This robust unit develops 60 kW (83 hp) at 5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 123 Nm at 3000 rpm. Combined with its 5-speed manual gearbox, the car achieves a maximum speed of 105 mph with excellent through-the-gears performance.
The Kalos is also equipped with a comprehensive safety package which includes a modern four-channel ABS system with electronic brake force distribution, ventilated disc brakes at the front, three-point safety belts for all five seats, and front and side airbags.
The new Kalos will be on sale in late 2002 and will be displayed on the Daewoo stand at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham from 23 October to 3 November 2002.Published 8 August 2002
