Larini joins Alain Menu as second WTCC team member
Chevrolet has signed Nicola Larini as the second experienced driver for its 2005 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) campaign. The 40-year old Italian has driven in more than 30 Formula 1 and many touring car races during his successful career that led to two championships in the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft - 1993) as well as in the Italian Superturismo championship (1992). Larini won eight races between 2001 and 2003 in the European Touring Car Championship (ETTC) that becomes the WTCC in 2005.
"I just could not miss the opportunity to join a world-renowned brand like Chevrolet, one that has a long record of wins on tracks from Indianapolis to Le Mans," says Larini. "Chevrolet is entering this new FIA World Championship at a time when this form of Touring Car racing becomes even more competitive. I am extremely focused on this challenge and I am sure that my experience as a developmental driver will be an asset to this programme."
Chevrolet will compete in the WTCC with three Lacettis prepared by UK based Ray Mallock Ltd. Eric Nève, in charge of the racing activities at Chevrolet Europe HQ, says: "With Nicola and Alain we are happy to have two very popular and experienced drivers in our team. We have a strong driver line-up and our next move is to offer our third seat to a young driver who has had some initial success with front wheel driven race cars." The third driver will be announced in the near future.Published 28 November 2004
