The Chevrolet Volt is now available to order, priced at £29,995 including the Carbon Vehicle Grant - there is only one trim level.
Initially the Volt will be available through two dedicated ‘Volt’ centres – Cambridge Chevrolet in Cambridgeshire, and Phoenix Chevrolet in Wimbledon, London.
The Chevrolet Volt is an E-REV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) rather than a pure EV – it uses a onboard petrol generator, which sustains battery power when the range is depleted so that the car can still be driven, with the wheels powered by its electric motor until it can be recharged.
The Chevrolet Volt includes heated leather seats, Bluetooth with voice recognition and embedded phone, electronic keyless ignition with touch button start, 17-inch alloy wheels, ambient LED-based interior lighting, solar absorbing glass, DAB Digital Radio and an energy-efficient six-speaker stereo system that uses minimal electricity to operate.
There is cruise control, air con, a 7-inch LCD screen with Driver Information Centre, touch-sensitive controls on the centre console, a pedestrian alert system, rear camera and front and rear park assist.
Although there is only one trim level, there are some options – Satellite Navigation (£1745) – DVD-Rom based with a 30 GB HDD for music storage and seven energy-efficient BOSE speakers with sub-woofer. Special and metallic paint finishes from £495 and 17-inch polished alloy wheels at £490.
The Chevrolet Volt has won a number of awards in North America and we spotted a Volt recently being driven by the character Teresa Lisbon in the cult Channel 5 US TV series ‘The Mentalist’.Published 29 February 2012
