Chevrolet Tacuma
Performance with economy
Tacuma buyers have a choice of two modern petrol engines with four-valve technology and twin overhead camshafts: The economical 1.6-litre version produces 77 kW/104 hp, while the 2.0-litre engine generates 89 kW/121 hp. As an alternative to the standard five-gear manual transmission, the larger engine can be ordered with a four-speed automatic gearbox from the German specialists, ZF. This state-of-the-art gearbox features electronic control and an adaptive shift program.
The top speed of the Tacuma is 104 mph and 0-62 acceleration 12.2 seconds (1.6 litre engine) and 112 mph with acceleration to 62mph in 10.3 seconds (2.0 litre with manual transmission), underlining the suitability of these spacious family cars for long-distance driving. The automatic variant has a top speed of 108mph and 0-62mph in 11.7 seconds. Depending on the engine, Tacuma fuel economy is 34mpg (1.6), 31.4mpg (2.0) or 26.2mpg (2.0 auto) on the MVEG combined cycle.
Sharp driving, steering and braking
The Chevrolet design team enlisted the support of engineers from the famous German sports car manufacturer, Porsche, to help to tune the chassis – at the front the wheels are suspended individually on McPherson struts, while at the rear there is a torsion beam axle. The standard ABS braking system, with electronic brake-force distribution, ensures outstanding efficiency.
The stable, crash-optimised body structure provides high levels of protection for the vehicle's occupants. Every Tacuma comes with standard driver and passenger airbags, new side airbags, five height-adjustable head restraints, and three-point belts on all seats. Special deformation zones in which the impact energy can be specifically dissipated have been incorporated in both the front and rear ends of the Tacuma. The vehicle achieved good results in more than 300 internal crash tests, due in particular to the sophisticated front-end design with its three load-absorbing elements and the dual-section, ladder-shaped auxiliary frame at the rear.
