Refined engines: responsive, with high torque
The Kalos 1.2S features a refined and economical engine. This long-stroke unit with a capacity of 1,150 cm3 develops 53 kW/72 hp at 5,400 rpm. The maximum torque of 104 Nm is available at 4,400 rpm. Eight valves are operated by a single overhead camshaft integrated in the cylinder head. The 1.2S has an average fuel consumption of 42.8mpg in the MVEG combined driving cycle offers lively performance, with acceleration from 0-62 mph in 13.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 98 mph.
The SX 1.4 litre power unit, a high-performance four-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 69 kW/94 HP, harmonises well with the sporty appearance of the Kalos three-door. This engine, with a displacement of 1,399 cm³, features twin overhead camshafts operating four valves per cylinder with a variable intake system that enhances air throughput at low engine speeds, thus boosting torque – the engine already reaches maximum torque of 130 Nm at only 3,400 rpm. This engine is also offered with the option of a four-speed automatic transmission.
The Kalos 1.4SX accelerates from 0-62 mph from a standing start in only 11.1 seconds (automatic: 11.9 s) and can reach a maximum speed of 110 mph (automatic: 106 mph). This engine is also economical, with a total fuel consumption of 39.8mpg in the MVEG combined driving cycle. Like the other engines, the 1.4 16V also meets Euro-3 emissions requirements.
Reliable partners: stable suspension and powerful brakes
The suspension system of the Kalos family, featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a rear torsion beam axle, the intelligent suspension geometry with a long wheelbase and a wide track combine safety and comfort. The running gear was specifically developed for European conditions during test drives in the UK.
Front ventilated disc brakes (diameter 236 millimetres) and rear drums (diameter 200 millimetres) stop the Kalos effectively without fading. Four-channel ABS with electronic brake force distribution is standard, as are 185/60 R 14 tyres.
The rack and pinion steering is installed on the front sub-frame, making the steering more precise. The new model also benefits from standard power steering. Power assistance is speed-dependent, greatly improving ‘feel’ and steering accuracy. For parking and at low speeds, more assistance is provided and the manoeuvrability of the vehicle is enhanced. At higher speeds, assistance is reduced, making for precise steering on longer trips. With its nimble turning circle of only 9.78 metres, the Kalos can easily be manoeuvred into even the tightest of parking spaces.
Chevrolet’s complete care package - cost effective ownership
