BMW Trophy Cabinet To Be Reinforced

Published: 6th February 2002
The groaning shelves of the BMW trophy cabinet were burdened further after a triumphant night at the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2002, on Tuesday 5 February. The four awards from What Car? followed hot on the heels of the five "gongs" awarded to the company at the Fleet Week awards, two weeks earlier.

What Car? created a special Lifetime Achievement Award for the 5 Series in recognition of its staggering seventh successive win of the Executive Car Award since 1996. Although the 5 Series has plenty of life left, this is a remarkable tribute by the discerning What Car? editorial team and quite unequalled by any other car.

What Car? editor, Steve Fowler paid special tribute to the 5 Series, "Since the 5 Series was launched, no other car has had a look-in for our executive award. It has set standards that many have tried to emulate, but none has approached. We can't commend it too highly".

What Car? also gave awards to M3 (Best Performance Car) and X5 (Best 4x4) as well as the award for Best Executive Car for the 5 Series.

Fleet Weeks 'Fleet Excellence awards' also brought a string of accolades for BMW.

These were:

  • Manufacturer of the Year
  • Executive Car - 5 Series
  • 4x4 - X5
  • Executive Diesel - 530d
  • Upper Medium Diesel - 320d/330d
