BMW X5
The 'x' factor - something you can't quite put your finger on, but it's very special indeed. The introduction of BMW's X5 in 2000 gave customers a taste of BMW's X factor with the arrival of the company's first purpose-built 4x4. This was a car that provided the safety, security and dimensions of an off-roader with the on-road driving dynamics of a typical BMW.
In developing the X5, BMW broke new ground and created a brand new segment of Sports Activity Vehicles and, in from the off, set the bar at a level to which other manufacturers aspire.
Three years on and the X5 still sets the pace. In a Which? survey published in October 2003, 92 per cent of X5 owners said they would recommend it to others, topping the popularity league among car owners for every make and model.
Enter the new improved X5, with all-new xDrive, BMW's new 'intelligent' four-wheel drive system. This is the model that delivers it all, a car with an all-surface capability to match its stunning looks and famous on-road prowess.
